OEDCA will produce activation events throughout the duration of Sonic Runway’s installation at City Hall to showcase local creative talent and offer a unique art experience for artists and audiences. The new design features audio inputs at both ends of the runway, enabling artists to plug in at either end, and to trigger the light patterns with their music in both directions. The new design includes a professional quality sound system, increasing its attractiveness to multidisciplinary artists as well as the public in general. The resulting look is elegant and clean, matching the modern architecture of the City Hall buildings.Īs part of the new version, the artist team have developed new state-of-the-art sound-responsive light patterns and will regularly update the lighting and sound programming, enabling ongoing new experiences for the public to enjoy. The long-term design consists of weighted steel base plates for the arches, which have a low-profile, beveled edge that allows for ease of flow between the arches for pedestrians, wheelchairs, and bikes. The new installation will match the approximate footprint of the previous temporary installation at City Hall Plaza, stretching 432 feet along the East Santa Clara Street sidewalk between Fourth and Sixth Streets. In bringing Sonic Runway back to City Hall, the artists have made updates to the design. In addition to providing an engaging experience for City Hall Plaza visitors, Sonic Runway will again serve as a canvas for arts and events such as live and recorded musical performances, fashion shows, video and photography, and will appear in countless selfies. “Sonic Runway exemplifies the power of public art to inspire and bring people together to celebrate creativity, and express their own,” says Director of Cultural Affairs Kerry Adams Hapner. Over the four months of its first visit to San José, Sonic Runway attracted an estimated 1.2 million visits. Based on its popularity, the installation was extended by two months. When in San José three years ago, Sonic Runway drew crowds every night and became a popular gathering place for San José residents of all ages and backgrounds, and a destination for visitors from throughout the greater San Francisco Bay Area and beyond. Live audio input is converted into intricate light patterns that beam through a corridor of 25 arches, stretching 432 feet at the speed of sound, so that sound and lights are synchronized.
